About Remote for LG TV

LG Smart TVs can be controlled from your phone over your home network, so you can use your Android phone as a remote without any infrared hardware. Remote for LG TV connects over Wi-Fi: there is no need to point at the screen, and you can adjust the volume or navigate menus from another room.

This page covers which LG TVs work, how pairing works, and what to check if your LG TV does not appear in the app.

Compatible LG TVs

LG Smart TVs

The app is designed for LG Smart TVs that connect to your home network, including recent models running webOS. Menus differ between model years.

Network connection required

The TV and your Android phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or the TV must be wired to the same router.

Non-smart LG TVs

Older LG TVs without a network connection only accept infrared remotes and cannot be controlled over Wi-Fi by any app.

Set up your LG TV

  1. 1. Install the app

Download Remote for LG TV from Google Play on your Android phone.

  2. 2. Join the same network

Connect your phone and your LG TV to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks and some routers isolate devices from each other, which prevents discovery.

  3. 3. Check the network settings on the TV

If your LG TV is not found, look in its network settings for an option that allows connections from mobile devices, and make sure it is enabled. The name of the option depends on the model year.

  4. 4. Select your TV and pair

Open the app, pick your LG TV in the list and accept the pairing request shown on the TV screen if there is one. After that the TV is remembered.

Troubleshooting

My LG TV does not appear in the app

Check that the phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network, and that the TV is switched on. Restarting the router or the TV often fixes discovery.

The pairing request does not show on the TV

Close the app, restart the TV and try again. Make sure the TV is not showing a full-screen app or a screensaver that hides the request.

The app cannot turn my TV on

A TV in standby cannot always receive network commands. Check the TV settings for an option that lets it be switched on from a mobile device, and use the physical remote for the first power-on.

Does it work without an infrared blaster?

Yes. The app uses your Wi-Fi network, so your phone does not need any infrared hardware.
