About Remote for Samsung TV
Samsung Smart TVs can be controlled from your phone over your home network, so you can use your Android phone as a remote without any infrared hardware. Remote for Samsung TV connects over Wi-Fi: there is no need to point at the screen, and you can change the volume or launch apps from another room.
This page covers which Samsung TVs work, what to expect the first time you connect, and what to check if your Samsung TV does not appear in the app.
Compatible Samsung TVs
Samsung Smart TVs
The app is designed for Samsung Smart TVs that connect to your home network. Model names and menus differ between years, but the principle is the same.
Network connection required
The TV and your Android phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or the TV must be wired to the same router.
Non-smart Samsung TVs
Older Samsung TVs without a network connection only accept infrared remotes and cannot be controlled over Wi-Fi by any app.
Set up your Samsung TV
1. Install the app
Download Remote for Samsung TV from Google Play on your Android phone.
2. Join the same network
Connect your phone and your Samsung TV to the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks and some routers isolate devices from each other, which prevents discovery.
3. Select your TV
Open the app and pick your Samsung TV in the list of detected TVs.
4. Accept the connection on the TV
The first time, the TV may display a message asking whether to allow the new device. Choose Allow with the physical remote, and the TV will remember your phone.
Troubleshooting
My Samsung TV does not appear in the app
Check that the phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network, and that the TV is switched on. Restarting the router or the TV often fixes discovery.
Nothing happens when I press a button
Look at the TV screen: it may be waiting for you to allow the connection. If you chose Deny earlier, remove the phone from the TV's list of connected devices or restart the TV, then connect again.
The app cannot turn my TV on
A TV in standby cannot always receive network commands. Check the TV settings for an option that lets it be powered on from a mobile device, and use the physical remote for the first power-on.
Does it work without an infrared blaster?
Yes. The app uses your Wi-Fi network, so your phone does not need any infrared hardware.
