About Remote for Roku

Roku TVs and Roku streaming players are controlled over your home network. Remote for Roku turns your Android phone into a wireless remote, handy for typing searches, moving through the home screen and controlling playback.

This page explains which Roku devices work, the one Roku setting that most often blocks phone apps, and how to fix discovery problems.

Compatible Roku TVs

Roku TV

TVs with Roku built in can be controlled by the app once they are on the same network as your phone.

Roku streaming players

Roku players and sticks connected to a TV work the same way, as long as the player itself is on your network.

Same network required

Phone and Roku device must be on the same Wi-Fi network, not separate guest and main networks.

Set up your Roku TV

  1. 1. Install the app

Download Remote for Roku from Google Play.

  2. 2. Connect to the same network

Make sure your phone and your Roku device use the same Wi-Fi network.

  3. 3. Allow mobile control on the Roku

In the Roku's system settings, check the option that controls access by mobile apps, and make sure it allows the network to send commands (the default setting usually does).

  4. 4. Select your Roku

Open the app and choose your device from the list. You can then navigate and control playback from your phone.

Troubleshooting

The app cannot find my Roku

Check that both devices are on the same network. Then open the Roku's settings, find the option for control by mobile apps and make sure it is not set to disabled.

The Roku is found but buttons do nothing

Restart the Roku and the app. If your router separates devices from each other, turn that isolation off or use the main network.

Does it replace the Roku remote completely?

It covers navigation, playback and text entry for the device it is connected to. Keep the physical remote for switching a TV on from standby.
